Deposit sizes: what percentage actually stops the bad ones from booking?

I moved from 20% to 40% non-refundable and my no-pay rate dropped noticeably, but I also lost a couple of legitimate small jobs. Interested in what others use by trade — and whether you take deposits by card, ACH or both.

Half up front, half on completion for anything under $5k. Nobody serious has ever objected.

ACH for anything over $2,500. Card deposits are the ones that come back as chargebacks six weeks later.
